The Center for Advanced Wound Healing at Stony Brook Southampton Hospital provides specialized care for patients with wounds that require advanced treatment approaches. The center is directed by the Respiratory Care Department and staffed by Registered Respiratory Therapists who are also Certified Hyperbaric Technicians. The team works with patients whose wounds have not responded to conventional treatment methods, offering individualized treatment plans based on each patient's specific condition and medical history.

The center uses sophisticated wound care practices and advanced clinical approaches to help advance the healing process. During an initial visit, physicians and nurses evaluate the wound, review medical history, and may order special tests to assess circulation to the affected area. Treatment plans are tailored to each individual patient, and most treatments are covered by Medicare, Medicaid, HMOs, and other private insurance plans.

Services offered:

• Wound care evaluation and treatment
• Hyperbaric oxygen therapy, which involves breathing pressurized pure oxygen in a comfortable treatment chamber to stimulate blood vessel growth, enhance immune response, reduce inflammation, and strengthen the body's ability to fight infection
• Treatment for diabetic foot wounds and problem wounds
• Care for delayed radiation injury, including soft tissue radionecrosis and osteoradionecrosis
• Treatment for refractory osteomyelitis, compromised grafts and flaps, and necrotizing soft tissue infections
• Care for crush injuries, compartment syndrome, acute traumatic ischemia, air or gas embolism, carbon monoxide poisoning, decompression sickness, severe anemia, and intracranial abscess
